World number 23 Simona Halep is yet to drop a set this week at the Dubai Tennis Championships after an assured victory over the returning Ons Jabeur on Thursday. The 30-year-old won the Melbourne Summer Set 1 at the start of the season, with this her third semi-final out of her last four tournaments after losing in the round of 16 at the Australian Open last month. World number 21 Jelena Ostapenko has endured the much tougher draw this week and she did it the hard way once again with a second-successive comeback victory against Petra Kvitova on Thursday after doing the same against Iga Swiatek on Wednesday. A victory over Sofia Kenin in the first round means she has taken out three-successive Grand Slam champions and she faces a fourth now in two-time major champion Simona Halep, who could have been a three-timer were it not for the Latvian beating her in the Roland-Garros final in 2017.
Halep returned the favour at the Beijing Open later that year to take their head-to-head record to 1-1 and this match looks incredibly finely poised. Ostapenko has already battled past two players who should have beaten her, perhaps more Swiatek than the currently wayward Kvitova, but this looks like one of those calls that sits on the fence: Halep in two sets or Ostapenko in three. For that reason, take Halep to win at least a set here.
