World number 13 Jelena Ostapenko has had to wait her turn to start her WTA Elite Trophy campaign but she looks like a dark horse to lift the title on Sunday after recent wins over the likes of Iga Swiatek and Jessica Pegula. The 2017 Roland-Garros champion has endured another topsy-turvy season but the ability to lose a match and still qualify for the semi-finals in Zhuhai should take some of the pressure off of her increasingly erratic form. World number 24 Donna Vekic has lost six of her last seven matches on tour but there were clear improvements on Wednesday in a three-set defeat to Chinese number one Qinwen Zheng. The Croat reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open back in January and she added a fourth WTA title to her name in Monterrey soon after but Ostapenko’s peak in 2023 has come this side of the summer, unlike her opponent. The pair share a 1-1 head-to-head record but this first meeting since 2017 might as well be their first. Back Ostapenko to edge this outright, particularly after Vekic’s tiring efforts on Wednesday.
