This could end up the match of the day between world number 14 Beatriz Haddad-Maia and number 22 Jelena Ostapenko with both players seeing plenty of three-set battles lately. 25-year-old Ostapenko leads their head-to-head 3-0 after most recently beating the Brazilian in straight sets at the Cincinnati Masters last summer and she beat Haddad-Maia to the Seoul Open title back in 2017 in their first encounter. Haddad-Maia has struggled to put players away in recent weeks, with a three-set victory over Tereza Martincova her fourth match in a row that required a decider. Ostapenko beat qualifier Mirjam Bjorklund in straight sets on Thursday in an altogether more comfortable opener but three of her last four matches have also needed deciders to suggest the three-set option could be a valuable move here.
