THE PREDICTION
There is no love lost between Jelena Ostapenko and Ajla Tomljanovic after their war of words following the Aussie’s three-set victory in the third round at Wimbledon back in 2021. World number 10 Ostapenko’s bullish on-court behaviour often rankles her opponents but Tomljanovic certainly did not take it lying down, with this backdrop set to make a thrilling clash on Thursday. Ostapenko leads their head-to-head 2-1 but all their matches have been closely fought, although the Latvian is the clear favourite here riding a six-match winning streak into the second round after winning the Adelaide 500 last week. Former number 32 Tomljanovic fought bravely to overcome Petra Martic in three sets on Tuesday, claiming only her second tour-level win since November 2022 after injury saw her miss 99% of the 2023 season.
Both players will be desperate not to lose this clash but Ostapenko should, realistically, come through in straight sets. However, the power of home support on John Cain Arena makes backing Ostapenko to win outright the sensible concession.
TIP: JELENA OSTAPENKO TO WIN
