THE PREDICTION

Both 28-year-old Jasmine Paolini and 22-year-old Emma Navarro have enjoyed rapid rises up the WTA rankings since last summer, with similarly combative, athletic playstyles frustrating tough opponents everywhere. The pair brought career-high WTA world rankings into Miami, Paolini of 14^th and Navarro of 20^th, after strong starts to 2024 but Paolini’s incredible title-winning campaign at the Dubai Masters last month eclipses Navarro’s maiden title claimed in Hobart back in January.

Paolini overcame a gutsy assault by young American Katie Volynets on Friday to look dialled-in for another battle here but Navarro stunned both Elina Svitolina and Aryna Sabalenka in three sets at Indian Wells before a quarter-final exit to eventual champion Maria Sakkari to bring the better immediate form to the table. Navarro has beaten Paolini in straight sets twice since last September to suggest she gets the better of things when their games cancel each other out and she will be backed to the hilt as a rising star of US tennis.
