THE PREDICTION
This will be a fascinating clash on Friday as former number two Barbora Krejcikova attempts to make a return to tour from recent injury. The current world number 27 played her first match in two months at the Stuttgart Open last week, taking the first set from Veronika Kudermetova before being edged out, and she should be better for it here in Madrid. Krejcikova won her Grand Slam title at Roland-Garros in 2021 after a remarkable surge up the singles rankings, having been a top doubles player for many years, but she has notably failed to win a clay title since that season – with each of her last four coming on hardcourts.
World number 73 Jaqueline Cristian is possibly in the form of her career after a brilliant run to the quarter-finals of the Charleston Open was ended by eventual runner-up Daria Kasatkina earlier this month. The 25-year-old beat in-form Emma Navarro and Madison Keys on the green clay but she will have to find her best performance yet to oust the wily Czech, who claimed their only previous encounter in straight sets in Sydney last year. Leave this tough call out of an accumulator but otherwise expect Krejcikova to find a way through.
TIP: BARBORA KREJCIKOVA TO WIN
