The electrifying rivalry between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner continued on Friday night as the Italian fought back from a set down to level their head-to-head at 3-3 in a thriller. 21-year-old Sinner will move back inside the top 10 when the rankings refresh on Monday, where be belongs, no matter the result here but despite his efforts against Alcaraz this still looks a tall order. World number five Daniil Medvedev overcame Karen Khachanov in three sets in the earlier match on Friday to make a fifth-consecutive ATP tour final and he won the first three in a row, including in a comeback over Sinner at the Rotterdam Open in February. The Russian much prefers the conditions in Miami to Indian Wells, where he was outclassed by Alcaraz in the final, and despite some close encounters over the years he has won all five of his matches against Sinner so far. Three sets seem likelier than two here and Sinner will be better than their recent battle in Rotterdam as he returns to the Miami Open final two years after finishing runner-up to Hubert Hurkacz.
This should be a fascinating match in which the crowd could play their part. It is likely that the majority will pull for Sinner after he ousted the defending champion so brilliantly but it is hard to count against this resurgent version of Medvedev. Back the Russian to win outright here or risk the three set option to avoid siding with anybody. Three of their five previous encounters have gone to a deciding set.
