THE LOWDOWN

JANNIK SINNER

World number 13 Jannik Sinner overcame an impressive fight from Ilya Ivashka on Monday night to beat the Belarussian in five sets, twice taking the lead before closing out the third with a double break. The Italian also played five sets in his first round clash with Daniel Altmaier to show some real grit at the tender age of 21 whilst also suggesting there is room for improvement. Sinner ha snow reached the round of 16 at all four Grand Slams, including three this season after also making the last eight in Melbourne.

CARLOS ALCARAZ

World number four Carlos Alcaraz overcame in-form former champion Marin Cilic in five thrilling sets on Monday night to help blow the draw wide open. The 19-year-old could end up the youngest world number one in history if he wins the US Open this Sunday, or loses the final to anyone but Casper Ruud. Whilst the rankings have been a reasonable mess for years now after the covid-19 pandemic and the ATP’s controversial points ban at Wimbledon it would still be a deserving achievement for the Spaniard, who has won four ATP titles this season including two Masters at the Miami Open and Madrid Open.

THE PREDICTION

This is already a storied and fascinating rivalry between two of the very top players of the next ten years of tennis. Carlos Alcaraz won their first meeting late last season at the Paris Masters on a hardcourt but Sinner beat Alcaraz twice in July this year on grass and clay, respectively, to reach the quarter-finals of Wimbledon, taking eventual champion Novak Djokovic to five there before defeat, and win his sixth ATP title at the Umag Open. A second-successive quarter-final at the US Open for Alcaraz suggests he may have the edge in these conditions, especially as it was an injury that forced him out of last season’s last eight clash with Felix Auger-Aliassime, whilst his run this season has seen less sets dropped than Sinner despite the Italian’s excellent, champion’s mentality in adversity.

Alcaraz has won at least a set in all three of their meetings so far and that makes taking him to win at least two as the just-about likelier victor look the sensible move here. However, for want of ducking away from a tough pick, the Spaniard’s performance against Cilic suggests he will get serious here when need be and he should be able to edge through to the last four.
