THE PREDICTION

World number eight Jannik Sinner has impressed so far this season with a seventh career title won at the Montpellier Open and a runners-up finish to Daniil Medvedev at the Miami Open in March but he has struggled, relatively, since moving onto clay. A run to the semi-finals of the Monte-Carlo Open was a strong one but the Italian struggled through to a round of 16 exit on home clay in Rome to suggest he is not ready to compete for the title here in Paris. 21-year-old Sinner reached the quarter-finals here in 2020 before defeat in straight sets to Rafael Nadal and he has reached the last eight at this level a total of five times.

26-year-old Alexandre Muller set a career-high ATP world ranking of 94th late last month after reaching his first tour final at the Marrakech Open, where he fell in three tight sets to Roberto Carballes Baena. The Frenchman has struggled on and off the tour since then, understandably, but he should find an extra gear on home clay in Paris as he attempts to win his first match here at the third time of asking. Muller has played well enough this season to warrant caution here and home advantage cannot be underestimated for a player at his level, making backing Sinner to win outright the sensible call.
