World number 103 Jan-Lennard Struff overcame Fabio Fognini in three sets on Wednesday to back-up a string qualifying campaign in Miami. The 32-year-old is capable tennis far better than his current deflated ranking suggests but it has been some time now since he was challenging in and around the top 40. World number 27 Grigor Dimitrov will always be a player capable of world-class tennis in flashes but his moments are coming fewer and further apart these days. The 31-year-old was forced to retire in the third set of his last match at this stage of Indian Wells but it looked like Jason Kubler was ready to win that clash and this is only the Bulgarian’s fifth tournament this season. Dimitrov leads their head-to-head record 3-2 but it would not be a huge surprise to see that levelled here.
