THE PREDICTION
This should be a fascinating first encounter between former number 12 Borna Coric and current number 40 Jack Draper, both of whom have struggled with injuries in their careers. 27-year-old Coric brings a deflated ranking of 55th into Rome after failing to match his excellent run to the semi-finals of the Madrid Open in 2023 last time out but he is making steady progress on his latest comeback from injury that saw him end his season early at the US Open last summer.
22-year-old Draper ended 2023 by finishing runner-up to Adrian Mannarino in Sofia and he started 2024 in second place to Jiri Lehecka in Adelaide, putting aside a choppy season full of injury setbacks. The Brit has needed top 15 opposition to oust him from his last three tournaments on clay, to Hubert Hurkacz twice in Monte-Carlo and Madrid as well as Taylor Fritz in Munich, but Coric is certainly of that level at his best in these conditions. Of the two, Coric has looked to struggle more since the start of the clay swing so take Draper to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
