THE PREDICTION

22-year-old Iga Swiatek became the ninth player to reach 100 weeks at world number one on the WTA tour this week but she will likely be preoccupied with her three-set defeat to Elena Rybakina in the semi-finals of the Stuttgart Open. The Pole was a two-time defending champion in Stuttgart, where she has kick-started her uber-dominant clay swings in each of the last two seasons, but recent defeats to Ekaterina Alexandrova in Miami and Anna Kalinskaya in Dubai are in keeping with her slightly erratic (by her standards) form this season.

Swiatek has yet to win the Madrid Open, opting to miss this week two years ago during her remarkable 37-match winning streak and finishing runner-up to Aryna Sabalenka last year, but she is too good on clay not to be considered one of the favourites this fortnight. World number 52 Xiyu Wang came back from a set down to stun clay specialist Ana Bogdan on Tuesday but she has drawn the shortest straw possible here. Back Swiatek to make a statement in straight sets after last week’s bruising defeat to Rybakina.

TIP: IGA SWIATEK TO WIN 2-0
