THE LOWDOWN

World number one Iga Swiatek came back from a set down to beat a resurgent Beatriz Haddad-Maia on Wednesday, dropping her first set of the campaign but also impressing with a consummate fight back. The 22-year-old is chasing her first Madrid Open trophy to complete the set of prestigious clay-court titles on tour, having won Roland-Garros three times and Rome twice, and she came close last season in finishing runner-up to Aryna Sabalenka in three sets.

World number 20 Madison Keys fought back bravely from a 0-6 first set dropped to 2022 Madrid champion Ons Jabeur, a result that will be emotionally significant to the American after she lost to Sabalenka in the semi-finals of the US Open last summer by a very similar score. The 29-year-old missed the first two months on tour through injury but she has impressed on her return, claiming four wins on the spin for the first time since coming agonisingly close to a second final in New York last year.

THE PREDICTION

Swiatek beat Keys en-route to her first Rome title in 2021 and she leads 2-1 in their head-to-head overall, although Keys claimed their most recent encounter in Cincinnati two years ago. The conditions suit Swiatek to a tee but it would be unwise to underestimate Keys, whose lesser-spotted top ability is a match for anyone on tour. Take the Pole to win outright.

TIP: IGA SWIATEK TO WIN
