THE LOWDOWN
World number two Iga Swiatek can return to number one for that coveted year-end finish if she wins the WTA Finals after ousting current number one Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets. The 22-year-old added her fourth Grand Slam title, and a third at Roland-Garros, this summer before falling a way a little at the start of the hardcourt swing but she came back strongly to win the Beijing Masters – bringing a 10-match winning streak into this huge clash.
World number five Jessica Pegula can move up to fourth with victory here and it would be her biggest title to date, usurping her two Masters trophies claimed in Guadalajara late last season and the Canada Masters in Montreal back in August. The 29-year-old has beaten the world number one, three and four this week without dropping a set to prove to the world, and more importantly herself, that she has the ability to tackle the best and it will be fascinating to see if she can finally break her quarter-final duck at Grand Slams next season.
THE PREDICTION
A WTA Finals clash between Iga Swiatek and Jessica Pegula would have been the fitting end to last season’s edition in Fort Worth after the pair grappled in the latter stages of prestigious tournaments four times in 2022, with Swiatek winning each of them en-route to titles in Miami, Paris, New York and San Diego. Pegula finally found her voice in their first encounter this season, though, at the United Cup as she helped the USA to that inaugural title and she more recently beat Swiatek in three thrilling sets in the semi-finals of Montreal to see her lead their 2023 head-to-head 2-1, with Swiatek leading 5-3 overall. All eight of their previous matches saw the winner go on to win the title and they will make it nine here for a truly remarkable, storied head-to-head that proves how close Pegula has been to more silverware.
Both have swept through the field this week to reach the final without dropping a set and both have beaten world number one Aryna Sabalenka to do so. It is hard to separate the pair at this moment in time without thinking of Swiatek’s previous dominance over the American but there is a certain amount of sentimental destiny in this for Pegula – who will throw every ounce of herself at what should likely be the biggest title of her career. Back Pegula to win at least a set, on a nine-match winning streak of her own, or consider the three set option here. If forced to pick a winner, though, it is difficult to look past Swiatek’s ruthless 16-4 record in finals.
