THE PREDICTION
This has the potential to be a thrilling battle on Rod Laver Arena on Thursday if Danielle Collins can bring her best to the occasion. The 30-year-old has endured a tough 12 months on tour to fall back as far as world number 62 but she set a career-high WTA world ranking of seventh after finishing runner-up to Ash Barty here in 2021, doing so via a bullish victory over Iga Swiatek in the semi-finals. World number one Swiatek practically never looked back after that defeat, embarking on a 37-match winning streak that saw six titles won on the spin, including her second of now four Grand Slam titles, and she has since beaten Collins three times on the spin to look the firm favourite here.
22-year-old Swiatek overcame a tough test by former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin on Tuesday but she will be better for an early battle and this second-successive tough draw is the sort of fuel that should feed her fire later in the tournament. Collins beat returning former champion Angelique Kerber in three sets on Tuesday for a first decent win of 2024 but it would not be a surprise to see her renowned grit force a decider here. Back Swiatek to win in straight sets on its own or outright inside an accumulator.
TIP: IGA SWIATEK TO WIN 2-0
