THE PREDICTION
World number one Iga Swiatek completed her set of the most prestigious clay-court titles on tour with a thrilling victory over Aryna Sabalenka in Madrid last Saturday, overcoming the defending champion in a three-set classic. The 22-year-old won back-to-back Rome Masters titles in 2021 and 2022, the first of which saw her hand a double bagel to Karolina Pliskova in a huge foreshadowing of the dominant force she would become on clay, but a recent defeat to Elena Rybakina in Stuttgart proved she can be beaten on her favoured surface.
World number 77 Bernarda Pera came through a strong qualifying campaign to bring momentum into her first round clash with Caroline Dolehide, beating her fellow American in straight sets, but this should be far too steep of a challenge. The 27-year-old is also at her best on clay but Swiatek is the out-and-out benchmark in these conditions, either side of the tours at this moment in time, and she can be backed to start strongly in straight sets.
TIP: IGA SWIATEK TO WIN 2-0
