THE PREDICTION

World number one Iga Swiatek has conceded just three games in her last two matches in Madrid as she makes a convincing pursuit of a maiden Madrid Masters title. The 22-year-old finished runner-up to Aryna Sabalenka here last season but she has won a least one of the other prestigious clay-court tournaments on tour, most notably Roland-Garros thrice in 2020, 2022 and 2023.

World number 14 Beatriz Haddad-Maia enjoyed her career-best run to the semi-finals at Roland-Garros last summer before falling foul of Swiatek’s undisputed top game on clay but she looks a threat here after some resurgent form in Madrid. The Brazilian finished last season as the WTA Elite Trophy champion but she has struggled to find any sort of rhythm until this fortnight, beating in-form Maria Sakkari in straight sets on Monday to suggest she is ready to push on.

Haddad-Maia beat Swiatek in a shock three-set victory at the Canada Masters two years ago but the Pole has won each of their last two in straight sets to gain revenge. Three sets would not be a total surprise but it is reasonable to expect Swiatek to come through in two in these conditions.

TIP: IGA SWIATEK TO WIN 2-0
