World number eight Hubert Hurkacz won his first ATP title on clay at the Estoril Open last month to complete a full set of surfaced amidst his eight career trophies. Estoril changed the narrative around the 27-year-old’s efficacy on clay and he has since impressed on his weakest surface, most recently reaching the quarter-finals of the Italian Open, to suggest he can be a tough draw for anyone this fortnight.
World number 162 Shintaro Mochizuki qualified well this week, riding his luck a little as Facundo Bagnis was forced to retire injured from their third round clash on Thursday. The 20-year-old burst onto the scene with a dream run to the semi-finals of the Tokyo Open on home soil last October but he brings next to no tour-level form on clay to this horrendous opening draw.
