THE PREDICTION
World number nine Hubert Hurkacz was the surprise champion at the Estoril Open earlier this month, claiming his first ATP title on clay to complete the full set amidst his career total of eight trophies: clay (1), grass (1), outdoor hardcourt (4) and indoor hardcourt (2). The 27-year-old beat next opponent Jack Draper in three sets en-route to the round of 16 at the Monte-Carlo Masters two weeks ago and he should be considered a dark horse for a deep run here in Madrid, where the high altitude offers the less effective clay-courters some respite.
Hurkacz leads Draper 3-1 in their head-to-head but three of their four meetings have seen sets go both ways, including twice on clay after their second clash went the Pole’s way in Monte-Carlo last spring too. 22-year-old Draper is finding his feet on the surface but, like Hurkacz, his powerful game thrives better on the faster grass and hardcourts on tour. A three-set victory over Thanasi Kokkinakis was solid start to his Madrid campaign on Wednesday but he will need to improve significantly on recent results in these conditions to get something here. Given their tight record so far, back Hurkacz to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
