THE PREDICTION

World number 11 Hubert Hurkacz overcame a negative head-to-head record with Lorenzo Sonego on Wednesday in a gruelling five-set thriller on Court 3. The 25-year-old should be the better for an early scare in Melbourne as a player who can often need a few rounds to find his incredibly high ceiling but it is a similar story for his next opponent. Both Hurkacz and world number 22 Denis Shapovalov reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon back in 2021 to set their best Grand Slam exits, with the Poel losing in four sets to Matteo Berrettini and Shapovalov losing to eventual champion Novak Djokovic in three. 23-year-old Shapovalov beat Taro Daniel in straight sets on Wednesday to back up a solid enough result over Dusan Lajovic in the first round but Hurkacz will be his toughest test yet by far. The Canadian took Rafael Nadal to five sets in the quarter-finals here last season but Hurkacz leads their head-to-head 3-1, with all four meetings on hardcourts.

This match will be a fascinating battle between Hurkacz’s measured power and Shapovalov’s wild talent. Back the Pole to win at least a set, or for both to take at least one, and leave the victor up to chance.
