THE PREDICTION

This promises to be a thrilling final between world number eight Holger Rune and number 14 Grigor Dimitrov, with the top and second seed coming out on top of an excellent week in Brisbane. Rafael Nadal’s return from a year-long absence has been the story of the week but former world number three Grigor Dimitrov did well to rise above the noise of facing Jordan Thompson, who delighted home fans with a huge upset over Nadal in the quarter-finals, to reach a third ATP final in seven months. 20-year-old Rune has steadily improved this week to hand in-form Roman Safiullin a blistering 7-0 tiebreak defeat in straight sets on Saturday. The Dane brought in Severin Luthi to partner with Boris Becker as a coaching supergroup this season and their influence, as well as the youngster’s own insatiable hunger, should make a potent force in this final.

Dimitrov lost in four sets to Rune at Wimbledon back in July, as his resurgent form began to show, but he exacted revenge in straight sets at the Beijing Open. The sensible pick looks to be taking the Bulgarian to earn at least a set, as he did in both of their previous matches, but the pressure to win a first title since 2017 may tell here in handing Rune a tight win.

TIP: GRIGOR DIMITROV TO WIN A SET
