World number eight Holger Rune was in a scrap with Yoshihito Nishioka on Tuesday but he did well to beat the tricky Japanese in four sets. The 20-year-old brought in Severin Luthi to partner Boris Becker in his coaching set-up for the 2024 season, making a huge statement of intent with ex coaches of Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic behind him, and he looked to be improving after a shaky start in Brisbane two weeks ago before finishing runner-up to Grigor Dimitrov.
21-year-old Arthur Cazaux stunned Laslo Djere in five gruelling sets to make the second round of the Australian Open on his debut and he brought some strong form to Melbourne after winning the Noumea Challenger two weeks ago. A first meeting with fellow youngster Rune should go the Dane’s way in straight sets but Cazaux has nothing to lose in this biggest match of his career and Rune has been far from totally convincing since the summer. Back Rune to win outright or consider a one-off on Cazaux to snatch a set.
