THE PREDICTION

World number 10 Grigor Dimitrov is enjoying one of the best spells of form of his career right now but clay has tended to be his least effective surface. The 32-year-old has finished runner-up at two of the last four Masters tournaments, to Novak Djokovic in Paris last November and to Jannik Sinner in Miami, and wins over the likes of Carlos Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev and Hubert Hurkacz this time last month suggest he should need top 10 talent to oust him in Madrid. 18-year-old Jakub Mensik upset clay specialist Yannick Hanfmann in straight sets on Thursday on his Madrid debut, particularly impressive in that it was his first ever tour-level match on clay. The world number 74 finished runner-up to Karen Khachanov at the Qatar Open in February, having upset top seed Andrey Rublev in the quarter-finals, to prove himself a serious up-and-comer but this should be too steep of a test against in-form Dimitrov. Back the Bulgarian to win outright for caution’s sake.

TIP: GRIGOR DIMITROV TO WIN
