THE PREDICTION

37-year-old Gael Monfils was ranked outside the top 500 on his return from injury last summer but the Frenchman has been in brilliant form since the late hardcourt swing, moving back up to 54th this week after reaching the semi-finals of the Qatar Open last month. The former number six particularly impressed on the back-to-back hardcourt Masters events in Toronto and Cincinnati last August to suggest he could be a serious factor this month on the Sunshine Double and he has troubled Jannik Sinner more than most this year – taking the red-hot Italian to three sets in Rotterdam.

World number 71 Max Purcell also enjoyed a brilliant spell last August, reaching the quarter-finals of the Cincinnati Masters with huge wins over Stan Wawrinka and Casper Ruud before an impressive three-set exit to Carlos Alcaraz. The Aussie took Ruud to five sets before defeat in Melbourne two months ago to suggest form like last summer’s is not too far away but an underwhelming start to 2024 says Monfils can find a way through here.

TIP: GAEL MONFILS TO WIN
