THE PREDICTION
Former world number six Gael Monfils conceded just three games to Max Purcell on Thursday to make a big statement ahead of this intriguing clash with eighth seed Hubert Hurkacz. 37-year-old Monfils came back from injury last summer with initial pessimism about the longevity of his career but he burst into form at the August Masters events, stunning the likes of Stefanos Tsitsipas, Cam Norrie and Alex de Minaur in deep runs in both Cincinnati and Toronto before finishing off the season with a 12th ATP title claimed in Stockholm.
World number eight Hurkacz possesses all of the tools required to excel in the slow-ish hardcourt conditions and he won his first of two Masters titles at the Miami Open three years ago, with victory in Shanghai last October his second. The 27-year-old reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open in January before a tight five-set defeat to Daniil Medvedev but he has struggled to put away top 20-quality opponents since to suggest that Monfils has a shot at the upset here. Four of Hurkacz’s last five matches have seen three sets and each of them have seen at least one tiebreak, so take the Pole to earn at least a set and add a tiebreak to avoid a tough result.
TIP: HUBERT HURKACZ TO WIN A SET (AND OVER 0.5 TIEBREAKS)
