World number 31 Francisco Cerundolo announced himself on the tennis stage this time last season with a stunning run to the semi-finals of the Miami Open and he has so far made great strides to emulate that with an upset over fifth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime on Sunday. The 24-year-old brought relatively poor form into the tournament after an underwhelming South American clay swing but he was excellent last summer with a consistent level that eventually saw him lift a maiden ATP title at the Bastad Open. World number 59 Lorenzo Sonego is another surprise round of 16 entrant after a straight-sets victory over 12th seed Frances Tiafoe on Sunday. The Italian fought back to find his best level against Dan Evans in the second round on Saturday and he looked a much better version of his former self against Tiafoe to suggest this will be a thrilling first meeting with Cerundolo. Both players are capable of flashy shots but Sonego has beaten some quality opposition this fortnight so far and he is much better than his current ranking suggests. Back the Italian to earn at least a set here and leave the victor up to chance.
