THE PREDICTION
World number 22 Francisco Cerundolo lost his first match of 2024 in straight sets to Roberto Bautista Agut last week in Hong Kong but he should fare a lot better for an early upset. The 25-year-old received a bye to the round of 16 as the third seed in Auckland after another excellent year on tour saw him claim a second ATP title at the Eastbourne International and reach the round of 16 at a Grand Slam for the first time at Roland-Garros. World number 79 Alexandre Muller made the huge leap from the Challenger circuit to full-time tour life last season, reaching his first final in Marrakech before defeat to Roberto Carballes Baena, and it will be interesting to see if he can push on in 2024. The 26-year-old qualified well over the weekend before an assured victory over compatriot Benjamin Bonzi on Monday but Cerundolo should prove too strong in their first encounter. Last week’s defeat makes this a tough call, though, so back Cerundolo to earn at least a set as the likelier of two capable victors.
