THE LOWDOWN
FRANCES TIAFOE
World number 34 Frances Tiafoe took some getting going in the first round but he ultimately prevailed over Argentine qualifier Marco Trungelliti in five sets. Tiafoe reached the final of the ATP 500 Vienna Open event late last season as part of an excellent end to 2021, finishing runner-up to Alexander Zverev. The American reached the quarter-finals here in 2019 before losing to Rafael Nadal.
TAYLOR FRITZ
World number 22 Taylor Fritz came through a tight opening set tiebreak to win through in three sets against Maximilian Marterer on Tuesday. The 24-year-old has been in exceptional form since suddenly rediscovering his best tennis at Indian Wells last October, where he beat Alexander Zverev en-route to the semi-finals. Fritz then finished runner-up to Marin Cilic at the St. Petersburg Open before reaching the quarter-finals of the Paris Masters.
THE PREDICTION
This could be a proper Australian Open classic between two Americans in or around the peak of their powers, especially Taylor Fritz who has beaten the likes of Alexander Zverev, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Andrey Rublev, Jannik Sinner and Matteo Berrettini since his Indian Wells revival. Frances Tiafoe is nearing a return to the top 30 after his own resurgence last year, with impressive wins over Sinner, Diego Schwartzman and Stefanos Tsitsipas last October at the Vienna Open still fresh in the mind. Fritz looks the more capable winner at this moment in time but the John Cain Arena should bring the best out of big-game player Tiafoe for at least a set here. This could easily go to five but take both players to win a set and leave the winner up to chance.
