THE PREDICTION
This should be a thrilling clash between two true showmen in former world number six Gael Monfils and current number 14 Frances Tiafoe. 37-year-old Monfils was ranked outside the top 500 earlier this season but he has fabulously fast-tracked his way back into the top 100 with huge runs in Toronto and Cincinnati in August before picking up his 12th ATP title, and a first since early 2022, in Stockholm last week. A straight-sets victory over Daniel Altmaier on Wednesday suggests the Frenchman is desperate to make the most of this renaissance form ahead of the Paris Masters and he looks the slight favourite here at this moment in time. 25-year-old Tiafoe rode his luck on Tuesday when Dan Evans was forced to retire injured after going up an early break but the result at least snapped his two-match losing streak. Tiafoe’s form has suffered terribly ever since he won the Stuttgart Open in June but a 1-1 head-to-head record with Monfils says this can come close. The crowd will play their part here so back Europe’s Monfils in his current vein to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
BETTING TIP: Gael Monfils to earn at least a set.
