Former world number seven Fernando Verdasco won five of his total ATP titles on clay, with his most recent coming at the Bucharest Open in 2016. The 38-year-old veteran has battled past Hugo Dellien and Thiago Monteiro in two three-set wins so far in Buenos Aires to reach a first quarter-final at tour-level since the Belgrade Open last May. He faces a much tougher foe next in third seed Lorenzo Sonego, though, with the Italian beating in-form Argentine youngster Sebastian Baez in straight-sets on Thursday. World number 22 Sonego was the winner of their most recent meeting at the Kitzbuhel Open in 2019 to level their head-to-head record 1-1 and he should be able to take the lead here with an outright win. Verdasco has played well enough this week to warrant that cautious pick.
