FELIX AUGER-ALIASSIME – Career-high ATP world ranking of sixth
World number 21 Felix Auger-Aliassime beat Ben Shelton in blistering straight sets, either side of an overnight rain delay, to continue his surprising form on clay. The 23-year-old famously brought in Rafael Nadal’s uncle and former coach, Toni Nadal, to work on his game for this surface, previously by far his weakest, but results have only really blossomed in the past two months.
Auger-Aliassime stunned Casper Ruud en-route to the Madrid Open final, where he took the first set before defeat to Andrey Rublev, and he has dropped just one set so far this campaign to look a serious threat to Carlos Alcaraz, whom he leads 3-2 in their head-to-head.
CARLOS ALCARAZ – Two-time Grand Slam champion
World number three Carlos Alcaraz passed a significant test on Friday with a straight-sets victory over Sebastian Korda, vastly improving on a frustrating four-set result over qualifier Jesper de Jong. The 21-year-old is often regarded as in the same mould as Rafael Nadal but clay is probably his least effective surface, with the pace and hand skills to thrive in faster conditions, and that is reflected in his Grand Slam titles won so far at the 2022 US Open and last summer’s Wimbledon.
FELIX AUGER-ALIASSIME VS CARLOS ALCARAZ PREDICTION
Carlos Alcaraz may trail Felix Auger-Aliassime in their head-to-head but he has won each of their last two encounters comfortably to look like levelling things here, although each of those results came en-route to this and last year’s Indian Wells titles.
Consider their real-terms head-to-head as 2-2, given that Auger-Aliassime won their first via an early retirement at the US Open in 2021, but it would be remiss to assume Alcaraz is better on clay given his nationality here in the spiritual home of his idol. Auger-Aliassime’s recent results on clay have been hugely surprising but also in keeping with a burgeoning return of the confidence that saw him explode into title-winning form in 2022.
Alcaraz is the favourite by merit but four or even five sets seem likely than two. Expect the Spaniard to find a way through but consider taking both to win a set and add at least a tiebreak to leave the result up to chance.
FELIX AUGER-ALIASSIME VS CARLOS ALCARAZ TIP: BOTH TO WIN A SET (AND OVER 0.5 TIEBREAKS)
