FABIO FOGNINI VS TOMMY PAUL PREDICTION
Former number nine Fabio Fognini beat Botic van de Zandschulp in comfortable straight sets on Monday and the rain delays have handed the 36-year-old an extra day’s recovery ahead of this intriguing fixture.
The 37-year-old is a cult hero in these parts as one of the more gifted clay-courters of his generation, with victory at the Monte-Carlo Masters in 2019 his most prestigious of nine ATP titles, but this looks too physical a test against world number 14 Tommy Paul, who should be able to shut out the noise.
27-year-old Paul conceded just six games to an out-of-sorts Pedro Cachin on Monday to build on his excellent clay form from the Italian Open, where he upset defending champion Daniil Medvedev before just missing out in three sets to Nicolas Jarry in the semi-finals. Fognini won their only previous encounter in his prime back in 2019 but back Paul to level their head-to-head here, probably in four sets.
