THE PREDICTION
23-year-old Sebastian Baez set a career-high ATP world ranking of 19th after winning his sixth ATP title at the Chile Open last week, backing-up his most prestigious yet won in Rio the week before. The Argentine also won back-to-back titles last summer at Kitzbuhel and Winston-Salem, perhaps even more impressive given the change from clay to hardcourts, and he should be considered a dark horse for a deep run as he rides a nine-match winning streak into Indian Wells. Former number nine Fabio Fognini came back from a set down to beat Bernabe Zapata Miralles to claim a first tour-level win this season. The 36-year-old enjoyed a rare run to the semi-finals of a tour-level event late last season in Metz, before defeat to eventual champion Ugo Humbert, to suggest he feels there is a little more juice left in the tank but Baez should find a way through this tough opener. Back the Argentine to win outright with three sets likely as he resets from trophy to second round.
TIP: SEBASTIAN BAEZ TO WIN
