World number 40 Fabio Fognini will be enjoying a return to the clay after a difficult season overall last year. The 34-year-old’s last ATP title came at the 2019 Monte-Carlo Open for his eighth overall on this surface and he looked in good shape against Pedro Martinez in the round of 16 on Thursday. This looks a tight contest, though, with world number 42 Federico Delbonis enjoying some strong support in his home tournament after an emotional first round match against Juan Martin de Potro and an assured win over Pablo Andujar on Thursday. Fognini leads this head-to-head 5-3, 4-3 on clay, but Delbonis was the winner in straight sets in their last meeting at last season’s Roland-Garros. Taking the Argentine to win at least a set here looks the shrewd move in a very tight match indeed.
