World number 46 John Isner won the most prestigious title of his career here back in 2018, one of 16 career ATP titles – 14 of which came on home soil. The American veteran is starting to show signs of slowing up on tour at 37 years old but he will always be a threat on a fast court and he will be well-backed by the Miami crowd as a popular servant of US tennis. World number 182 Emilio Nava will have his corner too, though, after receiving a wildcard for the second season running in Miami. The 21-year-old lost in straight sets to Hugo Gaston this time last season but he claimed the first, and so far only, tour-level win of his career in the first round of the US Open last summer with a five-set victory over John Millman. Isner should have too much power to be ousted this early on but three sets are a distinct possibility. Tiebreaks are usually ten a penny where the big-server is involved but it would be a fair risk on this occasion, making backing Isner to win outright the suitably cautious move.
