ELISE MERTENS VS ELENA RYBAKINA PREDICTION
World number four Elena Rybakina beat Arantxa Rus in straight sets on Thursday to back up a solid opener over Greet Minnen. The 24-year-old is a world-beater on any surface at her best, with three titles already this season from Brisbane, Abu Dhabi and the indoors clay of Stuttgart, where she stunned Iga Swiatek to prove a dangerous threat to the defending champion here.
World number 27 Elise Mertens maintained a truly remarkable streak of reaching at least the third round in each of her eight appearances at Roland-Garros with an assured victory over Petra Martic on Thursday but it is hard to see her emulating last year’s run to the round of 16.
The uber-consistent 28-year-old can cause the occasional upset at this level but she trails Rybakina 1-4 in a pretty convincing head-to-head, despite winning their only clay encounter in Madrid back in 2021. Rybakina has won each of their last three encounters in comfortable straight sets, including en-route to the Brisbane title this year, and she can be backed to do so again here.
