Top seed Elise Mertens looks to be in cruise control so far at the Hobart International. Conceding just five games apiece to Danielle Collins and Anna-Karolina Schmiedlova. The world number 29 looked strong in Brisbane last week before being blasted aside by eventual champion Elena Rybakina but she is one of the more reliable performers at this level, away from the very top players on tour. World number 50 Arantxa Rus grabbed an eye-catching straight-sets victory over eighth seed Varvar Gracheva on Wednesday, backing-up a strong three-set opener over Linda Fruhvirtova, as she continues to enjoy some of the best form of her long career. The 33-year-old finally won her first WTA tour title last summer at the Hamburg Open, having plied her trade very successfully on the ITF circuit over the past decade, and she impressed whilst representing the Netherlands at the United Cup last week. Mertens should be coming through this test in straight sets but back the Belgian to win outright for caution’s sake.
