World number 14 Beatriz Haddad-Maia enjoyed an incredible run to the semi-finals here last summer, stunning Ons Jabeur in the quarter-finals and overcoming a near-four hour round of 16 clash with Sara Sorribes Tormo before running out of steam against Iga Swiatek.
The 27-year-old took a set from Swiatek in the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open late last month to further prove her credentials in these conditions but she has suffered a few avoidable exits since to throw some doubts over this campaign.
World number 52 Elisabetta Cocciaretto won her maiden WTA title on clay at the Lausanne Ladies Open last summer but she has struggled to make much of an impact on the surface so far this year.
