THE PREDICTION

World number four Elena Rybakina outlasted an ever-improving Maria Sakkari in a marathon three-setter on Tuesday, backing up a solid victory over the returning Madison Keys. The 24-year-old has struggled to maintain her consistent best tennis on tour this season, despite winning titles in Brisbane and Abu Dhabi, but she has markedly improved on her performances from the start of Miami to look the title favourite in Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka’s absence.

Former number one Victoria Azarenka will back herself to cause an upset here as a three-time Miami Open champion but she will have to be perfect throughout to stand a chance against the imperious Kazakh. The 34-year-old grabbed an encouraging three-set victory over a resurgent Yulia Putintseva on Tuesday, backing-up solid wins over Qinwen Zheng and Katie Boulter, but Rybakina should pose her toughest threat by far. Azarenka took the first set of their meeting in Dubai last month before having to retire, handing Rybakina a 3-0 lead in their head-to-head, to suggest backing the fourth seed to win outright is a sensible concession.

TIP: ELENA RYBAKINA TO WIN
