THE PREDICTION

It seems fairly likely that the winner of this enticing clash will go on to lift the Miami Open title this weekend and on the face of it world number one Jessica Pegula looks the favourite for a few reasons. The 29-year-old leads Rybakina 2-0 in their head-to-head record after two notable wins last season, firstly here in Miami in the third round and then again in the second round of the Guadalajara Masters where she of course went on to lift her first WTA 1000 title. World number seven Rybakina is quite clearly the form player on the WTA tour right now, though, and she made it 10 wins on the spin with a comfortable victory over Martina Trevisan on Tuesday. The 23-year-old has the pressure of trying to complete the rare ‘Sunshine Double’ this month after lifting her first Masters title at Indian Wells two weeks ago but she has so rarely buckled over the last 12 or so months that it is hard to side against her. Pegula’s comeback over a rising Anastasia Potapova suggests she is ready for a fight here but the sensible option looks like backing Rybakina to earn at least a set as the likelier of two very capable finalists.
