THE PREDICTION
World number three Elena Rybakina made it six wins on the spin without dropping a set with victory over Cristina Bucsa on Wednesday but it was not as one-sided as her results in Brisbane. The 24-year-old conceded just three games to Aryna Sabalenka, who beat her in the Australian Open final last January, to lift the Brisbane trophy on Sunday but it may be that she is somewhat distracted this week in Adelaide in a lower quality field as she keeps one eye on Melbourne. There is a reasonable chance that the Kazakh could, for example, pull out of the quarters or semis this week once the Melbourne draw is announced and that should be considered before you approach this match.
World number 21 Ekaterina Alexandrova beat Veronika Kudermetova in straight sets on Wednesday to build on a strong comeback over Magda Linette in the first round. The 29-year-old leads Rybakina 2-1 in their head-to-head record but, crucially, she has not faced the world number three since 2020. Alexandrova should find a much tougher challenger this time around but take the cautious approach by backing Rybakina to win outright.
