THE PREDICTION

This will be a fascinating encounter between world number five Jessica Pegula, who won the ‘battle of the billionaires’ in straight sets over Emma Navarro on Monday, and world number 16 Ekaterina Alexandrova, who claimed a career-best ranking win over world number one Iga Swiatek. 29-year-old Alexandrova started 2024 in flying form, stunning Elena Rybakina at the Adelaide International and finishing runner-up to Jelena Ostapenko at the Linz Open, but a three-match losing streak coming into Miami made this excellent run to the last four in Miami look a stretch.

30-year-old Pegula has endured her poorest start to a season since her evolution on tour in 2021 but a run to the last eight without dropping a set this fortnight feels significant as she begins to gel with her new coaching team. Pegula beat Alexandrova in straight sets at the Rome Masters three years ago but this second encounter should come a lot closer, particularly as Alexandrova’s win over Swiatek was so convincing. Home advantage favours the American but back Alexandrova to earn at least a set with three highly impressive results so far this campaign.

TIP: EKATERINA ALEXANDROVA TO WIN A SET
