World number 67 Dominik came back from a set down to upset top seed Ugo Humbert on Wednesday, backing-up his excellent result over the Frenchman at the Miami Open in March. The 30-year-old has struggled to get back on the horse since his career-best run to the round of 16 in Miami but he should be fully dialled-in here after usurping Humbert’s seeding in what is now a wide-open Lyon Open draw.
World number 29 Tomas Martin Etcheverry was in control of his clash with Thiago Seyboth Wild before the Brazilian was forced to retire in their second set and he will consider himself another beneficiary of the draw. The Argentine reached the semi-finals of the Barcelona Open this time last month, before defeat to eventual champion Casper Ruud, and if he can find that level here he should be reaching the semi-finals.
A first meeting between the two promises to be a lengthy battle but back Etcheverry to earn at least a set as the more dependable performer in these conditions.
