World number 84 Clara Burel was in control against in-form Ana Bogdan before the Romanian was forced to retire injured in their second set on Friday whilst world number 90 Diane Parry saw off Alize Cornet in straight sets to make this a surprising semi-final fixture. 22-year-old Burel is yet to drop a set this week with eye-catching results over Olga Danilovic and up-and-comer Emma Navarro but Parry has been in plenty of battles over the last few weeks, almost beating top 30 opponents in Petra Martic and Qinwen Zheng at Wimbledon and the Palermo Ladies Open, respectively. A first tour-level meeting between the two is a very tough call indeed but Burel’s results have been the better of the two this week to suggest taking the elder Frenchwoman to earn at least a set is the sensible way to avoid picking a winner.
