World number 62 Diana Shnaider beat Greet Minnen in straight sets on Tuesday to get a strong foothold in at the Italian Open and she could be ready for a big run this fortnight if she can maintain that level. The 20-year-old has impressed mostly on hardcourts so far, winning her maiden WTA title at the Hua Hin Championships in February, but she possesses a compact, powerful game that could excel on clay with more experience under her belt.
World number 17 Liudmila Samsonova is also at her best on hardcourts but she has so far struggled almost everywhere this season, recently snapping a four-match losing streak at the Madrid Open before an exit to Madison Keys. The 25-year-old is one of the streakier players on tour, with three titles won within four months in late 2022, but she has dropped at least a set in each of her last six matches to open the door for an upset here. Back Shnaider to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
