World number 39 Anastasia Potapova looked in decent shape at the Stuttgart Open last week, overcoming fellow Russian Liudmila Samsonova in three sets, but she came up against a resurgent Marketa Vondrousova to crash out quickly. The 23-year-old possesses all of the weapons to excel at the Madrid Masters with solid clay sensibilities and a big game that can take advantage of the altitude here, although she struggled to make much of a dent this time last season after reaching the last four in Stuttgart.
World number 61 Diana Shnaider is a powerful up-and-comer who claimed her maiden WTA title on hardcourt at the Hua Hin Championships in February, ousting defending champion Lin Zhu. The 20-year-old brings a two-match losing streak into Madrid but she finished runner-up to Elisabetta Cocciaretto at the Charleston Challenger this time last month to suggest she could enjoy better results on the rest of the clay swing.
