THE LOWDOWN

DAVID GOFFIN

World number 60 David Goffin beat an out-of-sorts Aslan Karatsev in straight sets on Monday to continue some excellent form on clay. The 31-year-old won the sixth ATP title of his career last month at the Marrakech Open and his first also came on clay at the Kitzbuhel Open in 2014. Goffin finished runner-up to Daniil Medvedev at the Cincinnati Masters in 2019.

BOTIC VAN DE ZANDSCHULP

26-year-old Botic van de Zandschulp set a career-high ATP world ranking of 31st this week after reaching the final of the Munich Open on Sunday where he unfortunately had to retire injured in the first set to leave Holger Rune champion. The Dutchman came back from a set down to stun Pablo Carreno Busta on Tuesday in three tough sets as he continues to surprise on the tour as one of the most improved players in the last year, with a run to the quarter-finals of the US Open in September his greatest achievement to date.

THE PREDICTION

This looks a potential marathon match in a first meeting between David Goffin and Botic van de Zandschulp. Both players have enjoyed form on clay with a final won for Goffin in Marrakech and Van de Zandschulp looked odds-on favourite to win in Munich last weekend before his injury. Goffin is a tough man to predict these days but his form looks to be improving steadily and he should be troubling the top 40 once again sooner rather than later. On this occasion, backing Van de Zandschulp to win outright looks a reasonable risk with his result over Carreno Busta but also against the likes of Miomir Kecmanovic and Casper Ruud last week.
