Former world number one Rafael Nadal won his first of five Madrid Masters titles two years before his first opponent here, 16-year-old Darwin Blanch, was born. This should be an entertaining encounter between the hotly-tipped future star and Nadal, who has all-but set the date for his tour retirement at Roland-Garros this summer, but Blanch will have to cope with playing the unfancied underdog against the home hero. Nadal’s aura forced an inordinate amount of unforced errors from the racket of Flavio Cobolli at this stage of the Barcelona Open last week, before a competitive exit to Alex de Minaur, and Nadal may suffer a similar fate here with the Aussie waiting patiently to face the victor here. Blanch reached the semi-finals of the French Open Boys’ Singles last summer, losing to eventual champion Dino Prizmic, but playing the 14-time Paris champion should prove a half-humbling, half-bucket list experience. Back Nadal to win in straight sets.
