THE PREDICTION
Former world number four Sofia Kenin scraped herself back up the rankings last season in a hugely, if still quite frustrating, season that started with a semi-final exit here in Hobart. The 25-year-old may never find the level that saw her win the Australian Open back in 2020 but she is certainly capable of better form than her current rank of 38th suggests. A straight-sets victory over Greet Minnen on Tuesday makes up for last week’s shock defeat to Arina Rodionova in Brisbane and she should have more than enough to find a way past world number 195 Daria Saville, herself still struggling to return from a lengthy injury lay-off. 29-year-old Saville is also far better than her ranking suggests, with a career-high of 20th set back in 2017, but she has struggled in singles practically ever since her return to tour in June.
A comeback win over Anna Blinkova was encouraging for Saville on Monday but Kenin should be able avoid an upset in this first meeting between the two. Back the inconsistent American to earn at least a set as the likelier of two capable victors.
