THE PREDICTION
World number four Daniil Medvedev beat the likes of Alexander Zverev and Frances Tiafoe before finishing runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz in the final here last season, although he went on to lift the title in Miami at Jannik Sinner’s expense. The 28-year-old won the 20th ATP title of his illustrious career at the Italian Open two months later, his first on clay to complete the surfaces set, to make it six Masters titles so far. Losing another Australian Open final, this time from two sets up against Sinner, looked to have taken its toll in a laboured run to the semi-finals on Dubai last month but the Russian should be better for a disappointing week. Medvedev is a hardcourt purist who has not held back in his feelings about the slower conditions here but he proved he can suck it up 12 months ago and this looks a kind opener to get acquainted once again as he faces clay specialist Roberto Carballes Baena. The Spaniard grabbed an eye-catching mini upset over in-form Flavio Cobolli on Friday but a consummate defeat to Medvedev in Miami last season suggests this third encounter will also fall in straight sets.
TIP: DANIIL MEDVEDEV TO WIN 2-0
